What have we here? Fred Hale, one of Bristol's finest guitarists, if you have seen him in any of his previous bands you will know! Nikki Brooks describes herself as Robert Plant with balls. I have seen her at a couple of blues jams and wondered what all the fuss was about. Well now I can tell you! Well rehearsed and fronting this new band, Nikki was just excellent. With Moose on second guitar and Jerry Osborne on drums we have Burnin' Blues.

Fred assured me that Burnin' blues are not just another dull blues band playing stock 12 bar and he was very nearly telling the truth. The first song Be Devilled by Nikki really rocked and I knew at this point that we were in for a treat.

The sound system at the Thekla is brilliant. When it was operated by the Jake Stigers band later in the evening the mix was faultless. However, the house sound monkey never quite got it right and the mix for Burnin' Blues was not good. There was a long delay at the beginning of the guitar solos before the lead instrument was brought up in the mix and I found this quite irritating. A good sound monkey is worth looking after, if you have one please cherish him or her.

This was Burnin' Blues first gig and they have the potential to do extremely well. With Nikki and Fred on the same team and the right material, they can't fail.

In my opinion, Burnin' Blues should concentrate on the rock songs that they played so well at this gig and dump the 12 bar stuff. This gig showed their potential and with the right material I can see them becoming one of Bristol's top gigging bands. They have the talent energy and experience to take them well above the average league. I Haven't mentioned Moose or Jerry much but they did exactly what was required to give a complete full sound while Moose provided some excellent classic rock guitarist postures.
