Review & photography By Ian Bradley

I had been drinking this evening but not Elbow's Grounds for divorce cocktails, apparently the band are still working on this drink.

The band casually walked on stage, gave a wave to the crowd then took their positions and started with the opening track, Starlings, from their new album The Seldom Seen Kid, followed by The Bones of You.

Starlings had Guy and bassist Pete blowing their trumpets at each other looking like they were both vying to be the loudest. Starlings also has the best song lyric I've heard in a while "So I guess I'm asking you to back a horse that's good for glue"

Other stand out tracks from the night were the sublime Mirrorball, also off the new album, where the whole venue was swathed in mirror ball light reflections which set the mood of the song perfectly. The other was the first single of the new album Grounds for Divorce, the song was so loud you could feel the power from the band from where I was sat, 3rd row from the back on the balcony !

The other highlight for me was Guy's banter in between songs, a request from the crowd "Can you beatbox?" transpires into a story of true back stage rock n roll antics where Guy tells the audience that he and members of the band were playing Scrabble earlier that day. Guy revealed that a member of the string/choir had asked him if he had ever worn a dress and up until the beat box question was the weirdest question he had been asked all day. His reply to the beat box question, "Can I beatbox ?....Can I f**k !"

The rest of the set list drew from their new album and other classics from their critically acclaimed previous 3 albums. All of which were amazing and the crowd thought so too.

The band finished their first set with their beautiful love song One Day Like This, and like the lyrics say....

"Oh anyway, its looking like a beautiful day...........One day like this a year'd see me right!"

My only disappointment of the night was no rendition of their fantastic cover of Massive Attack's Teardrops which has been performed on their previous tour, but that's just me being greedy.

If you missed this amazing gig Elbow are playing at Glastonbury, Lattitude & the Reading & Leeds festivals this Summer, they also have their own large scale gig up in Cheshire at Delamere forest. Massive Attack have also invited Elbow to be apart of their Meltdown festival at the Royal festival hall in June.
