Greenback at the Louisiana - 30th July 2008

It’s a hot sticky night in the centre of Bristol, the location for greenback’s show tonight is the Louisiana.

Greenback come on around 8.45pm so I make my way upstairs to a small but very comfortable air conditioned room.

The room is half full but there is a great atmosphere in there.

Greenback kick of with a jazz intro while waiting for lead singer Amanda Baigent to get to the stage, this intro sets the mood for the set, everybody is already tapping there feet and nodding there heads along to the catchy guitar pickings of Alastair Sneddon, backed up by the very tight drumming of Jeremy Parker.

They play some fantastic covers, halo by Texas being one of the outstanding ones, Amanda’s voice really doing the song justice.

Unfortunately a cover of Hedonism by Skunk and Ansie is slightly let down by a technical fault of the second guitarist’s effects box, but the band carried on and dealt with the technical hitch like pros.

More importantly Greenback’s own song’s shine through, showing just how well they can compose and structure a funky jazz, come folk song. Aint cheating is a crowd favorite, showing the skills that both Alastair and James have on the guitar, backed very well by Jez on drums and the melodic bass beats from Henryk Banasiak, really make this song one of there best of the evening.

There set gets cut a bit short due to time running out and other bands needing to play, so they finish with Long way down.

Which is a great way to end a great set. This track has a real blues feeling to it, full of slide guitar and backing vocals from Alastair and James, which compliment the very powerful voice of Amanda.

All in all a fantastic night was had by all, the only way I can fault them is with the technical hitch but that happens to the best.

As far as I can see the sky is the limit, be sure to check them out, you wont be disappointed.
