Inextremis EP Review - By Fred from Bristol Rocks

This is a very, very good band!  Folks...I am going to be a bit picky in reviewing this CD...the reasons for this is that I think this band have a real opportunity to get somewhere....SOON!

The CD kicks off with 4/4 Time, and straight away In Extremis are into '80's/90's ground breaking rock gods Extreme territory, complete with Gary Cherone soundalike vocals....which talent wise is a very good thing indeed!  The contrasting guitar picking at the start is sweet and the Bass and Drums are faultless.  The structure of the song is very mature and In Extremis display a thorough knowledge of the hard rock genre...they also demonstrate an ability (sadly lacking with many young bands) to come up with interesting vocal melodies..not the usual Dum dee dum de dum de dum, Da dee da dee da dee da!  Very picky point one.... whilst the guitarist displays obvious talent, I don't think the solo work has been crafted with as much thought as the song deserves.  I don't expect Nuno Bettencourt but just a bit more care and something more memorable?

Very picky point two....this song sounds a lot like Extreme....calling the band In Extremis will invite obvious comparision...and as the other songs demonstrate, there is much more on offer here than a wannabe band!

Track two, Strange Kiss, has a more modern vibe (think Velvet Revolver).  Here the Guitars sound very Slash and the vocal treatment would not be out of place on Contraband.  Again the arrangement and musicality is very mature

Track 3 is called Don't Blame Me.  A mixed bag this one....the start is based around an acoustic guitar riff, which although pleasant, is not really strong enough to build the song around....however...when the song kicks off around 2/3rds of the way through all is forgiven...and this is arguably the sort of solo the other songs deserve...great stuff.

The CD closer is called A Little More Fun and is a Bristol Rocks favourite.  This track suffers from a comparatively mushy production, and was recorded separately; and not as well as the others.  Despite the sound it is a brilliant song and which, I think more demonstrates In Extremis creating music in there own style.  The rhythm section are awesome and the bass solo just begs to be listen to just one more time!  The vocal melody and delivery is again very song.  Guitar wise there is a nice memorable recurring hook throughout and some tasty riffage.

...and the CD is very well packaged and presented to boot!

I very much look forward to hearing this bands future output....it's about time we had a great new British hard rock band...and this could well be it!
