Review Photography & Video by Kevin

It is the first anniversary of Alfie Kingston's 'Acoustic Night' at the Old Tavern at Blackberry Hill.

I was at the first one and have been to a few since then. It is interesting to note the development of the event with Simon from the old Tavern providing the lighting and Alfie's enhanced sound bought on by a year of experience we should be in for a good evening.

First up was the Undercover Hippy who I notice has been gigging frequently around Bristol.

My first comment is that I don't think that he is a real hippy because he isn't smelly enough.

I mentioned to Alfie that I thought the Undercover Hippy exceptional. He had the attention of every person in the audience throughout his performance an Alfie told me that he thought that was because the Hippy was entertaining people and not just performing his songs. This is what the hippy does, he has an excellent voice, the songs are lively and the lyrics intelligent. But he has something more and that is the ability to entertain. His penultimate song had a lyric generated on the spot from words that were shouted out by the audience....brilliant.

The Undercover Hippy has something that makes his act very special. Highly recommended!!

Chris Stanley is next up with Ernie Hankin on guitar and Mike Stanley on bass. This is the first time that I have seen Chris and I was impressed. The set consisted of covers and the songs were covered in such a way as to make them interestingly different. Chris Stanley band
Here are three extremely competent players making a set of covers their own.

This was the forth time that I have seen Clumsy live and as always they were superb. Playing a mixture of originals and covers in the unique Clumsy style. Joel snapped a couple of guitar strings during the set but even this was not enough to put a damper on things. The strings were replaced as Patch gibbered to the audience and then they carried on to play an excellent set. Clumsy
Clumsy should really be out there playing festivals this year (and for all I know they may be) Their original material is quite unique and the band are one of the most entertaining live acts that you will see.
