Kathryn Courtney-O'Neill - Freelance Journalist

I've had a variety of jobs, most of which were uninspiring. Even whilst working for the local council I would pass the BBC building on my way to work via bus and kept saying to myself  "One day I will work there in the TV or radio department"  and sure enough I did!

I've always been interested in the media. It was creative and exciting and I was also into music in a big way too. My family of Uncles and Aunty were heavily into music having formed their own band (after playing in other bands) and were on the music circuit for a number of years.

I've run the ABBA News Service, worked with a host of tribute bands over the years, and record companies. Managed the ABBA Day and ABBA Weekend Events, also the Abba Tribute Weekend too. And through all of that got my foot in the door for media work. From researcher, writer, reviewer through to reporter.

I spent five years working at BBC Radio Bristol, beginning with Actionline and working my way through to Guideline, a health and disability radio show, to community issues, 'Children In Need' which is fabulous to be involved with, to working with the likes of Steve Yabsley. And I have to say I loved being involved in that area of work. Given the opportunity I'd go back to it without hesitation. I've even done some TV work, mainly as a researcher and even took the opportunity to work for a German TV show for a short while as a researcher/consultant

I also do publicity work too, the most unusual event so far being harness racing. It is a fascinating sport and I would recommend it as a day out for all the family if the opportunity arises.

I'm also into web site design and even went to college to improve my skills. It's all about the creativity, providing the right information and designing something that can read or seen by all web site users. People do not realise that the Disability Act covers web sites and they have to be accessible to all. The way a web site is designed can easily knock out the speech programmes on a visually impaired person's computer, thus not making it accessible to them to read.

What else can I tell you? I'm a member of the National Union of Journalists, I love a challenge and enjoy my work! Now not many people can say that! I just love meeting people and talking with them (not to them), finding out more about them, what makes them the person they are, getting the real person across. It's about what really matters to them and not what others assume.

I've met so many people, especially during my time with BBC Radio Bristol. From the famous and not so famous and had the opportunity to interview them. Some of my favourite interviews include 'Art and Power', 'Bristol Cancer Help Centre', 'Organic and real food festival' to a little boy who is blind and was on an adventure holiday. He really loved being part of the whole experience. Anything is possible no matter what. He wants to work in radio one day and I'm sure he will, but his favourite song at the time was Hear'Say "Show me the way to your love" which was played after his interview, he introduced the song himself, but I always think of that little boy and how he embraced life every time I hear that song. I've also interviewed Bjorn Again, Hazell Dean, Jackie Stallone, Chris Green, Modesty Blaise, Anthony Worral Thompson, Sharron Davies, among others and enjoyed every moment chatting with them.

And I am now taking up my next challenge. Writing for Bristol Rock. This should be fun! I am sure I will enjoy my stay here. Of course if you have an interesting story to tell, a CD to review or even a live gig please contact me through "myspace".  I also have a hand in the tribute pages of Bristol Rock too due to my interest in tribute bands and artists, so please get in touch if you are playing in the area. I don't bite and as long as you have the courage of your conviction in what you do I'm sure we'll get along famously.
